Spring Cleaning Checklist… with kids

We already covered an important part of spring cleaning and organizing with kids – getting them excited to be part of the process. Now, that we’re ready to find the perfect spot for their new clothes, let’s get started.

1. Discard

Making space will not be a problem after you start the discarding process. Get rid of anything that doesn’t fit or doesn’t bring you joy anymore. What does that mean? I read it in The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and it makes perfect sense.

You probably keep a lot of things because you “may” wear this again or it feels a little sentimental because a friend or family member bought it. Like Elsa says, you have to let it go. Don’t hold back about getting rid of things. It served its purpose. Now, it’s time to move on.

2. Organize

Oh, this is the fun part. There are so many different ways you can organize a kids closet and drawers – even if you don’t have a ton of storage options.

Closet

Let’s start with the closet. I sort everything I hang up by the article of clothing. The pants go together, the shirts go together, the dresses, the shorts, and so on. After they are categorized, I color coordinate them. In those colored sections, I’ll display the tank tops to the short-sleeved shirts to long-sleeved shirts.

I know it sounds crazy, but once you try it, you’ll be hooked. It doesn’t only make finding things so much easier, but when you put things away, you’ll know exactly where they go.

Drawers

Okay, this is the game changer. Image opening up your drawer and seeing everything inside without digging around and moving things. It’s amazing. This is how you do it.

Fold your article of clothing like you normally would. Then, fold it in half one more time. It will almost look like it’s rolled up, but it’s not. When you put it in your drawer, instead of placing it down, place it up. In other words, don’t set it down horizontally. Set it down vertically with the last part you folded facing up at you.

This doesn’t only allow you to see everything in your drawer at a glance, but it also allows you to fit a lot more in your drawer.

3. Add New

I save the best part for last… well, almost last. Now, you can add your kids new clothes from OshKosh B’gosh to the closet or drawer. Julianna added a ruffle chiffon foil print dress to her collection of dresses and Landon got a pair of new classic jeans to replace his smaller size.

They will remember exactly where they go because you just organized the closet and drawers to give everything a proper space. Yes, this also works for swimsuits too!

4. Donate

Finally, end your spring cleaning party on a high note by giving away all of those gently used clothes to a place like the Goodwill or Salvation Army.

5. Celebrate

Your kids just helped you clean and organize all of their cool, kids fashion. Now, it’s time to wear some of those cool, kids styles to the park and celebrate feeling clean, organized, and accomplished!
