Beach Read by Emily Henry is a quick, fun read that will have you rooting for the two main characters from start to finish. I kept reading because I couldn’t wait to see what happened next!
About Beach Read
Beach Read became an instant New York Times bestseller when it was published in May of 2020.
Oprah Magazine named it one of the top 29 beach reads of 2020. If you’re wondering what makes a book a “beach read”, click here.
The author is Emily Henry. She writes stories about love and family for both teens and adults (which I personally love because I can still get into a good YA book at 36 years old.)
She studied creative writing at Hope College and the New York Center for Art & Media Studies and now spends most of her time in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the part of Kentucky just beneath it. (I’m including this fun fact because I’m a Buckeye. Go, Bucks!)

Beach Read Book Summary
Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.
They’re polar opposites.
In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they’re living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer’s block.
Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel.
She’ll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he’ll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love… or will they?

My Book Review for Beach Read
Beach Read had me wanting to keep reading just a little bit more to see what happened next and how the two main characters would continue to interact with each other.
As someone interested in writing a book someday, I also loved seeing a look at their process – even if it was fictional.
If this were a movie, it might be too dark for Hallmark and not dark enough for Lifetime, but would be a better bit for Lifetime… and that may be why I loved it so much.
This was a great follow up to some darker, thrillers I’ve recently read.
I needed something lighter and more fun and this was a perfect fit.
My Beach Read Book Recommendation
If you are someone who likes to read books, I think you’ll like it because this book gives you a fiction look at the life of book authors. Yes, it’s fiction, but since a best selling author wrote it, I can’t help but imagine that’s what it’s really like.
I also recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading romance, young adult, and for people who loved those 90s flicks like She’s All That and 10 Things I Hate About You. I was getting some of those vibes as I was reading it (while imagining how hot they would cast the character of Gus if it was made into a movie).
My Beach Read Rating
I give Beach Read 4.5 out of 5 stars. It was very good!
