I was born and raised in Central Ohio and never made it to Amish County in Holmes County… until now. I guess it takes moving away from home to travel back to be a tourist in the heart of Amish Country. 

In Ohio’s Amish Country, we visited Millersburg, Charm, Walnut Creek, and Berlin to get a taste of the Amish community and Amish culture.

I did it in a day, but strongly suggest staying a few nights because there is so much to see and do. Click here for the best places to stay in Amish Country.

Visiting Amish Country in Ohio

Because we only made it a day trip, there was a lot we didn’t see. So, if you’re planning a trip to Amish Country in Ohio, I suggest staying at one of the cute bed and breakfasts in the area to make sure you see and do it all. 

Hershberger’s Farm and Bakery

We got started at Hershberger’s Farm and Bakery. This place was a hit for everyone in my family.

My husband couldn’t get enough of the fresh produce and baked goods in the bakery and my kids loved seeing and feeding the animals in the petting area. Here, you can also take Amish buggy rides. 

At the bakery, you can choose from the area’s largest selection of fresh baked goods, local cheeses, jerky, canned goods, spices, fresh vegetables, and more.

The bakers make dozens of bread, pies, cookies, muffins, and donuts every day. In my family, the pies and fresh kettle corn were a hit!

In the farm animal petting area, you can get up close and personal with a variety of farm animals like chickens, ducks, rabbits, goats, sheep, horses, cows, and more. The best part was that we bought carrots to hand-feed the animals.

Keim

Keim is a homebuilding and woodworking destination. I’m not going to lie, it kind of makes me want to buy all the tools and start creating and making things.

Here, Keim offers all the tools and materials to help you take on your DIY projects, a wide selection of wood species, finishes, and custom designs, great home decor, an amazing playhouse my kids didn’t want to get out of, a cafe, and in-store home centers that show you life-size demos of bathrooms, kitchen, etc. It’s like the Amish Ikea!

Der Dutchman

When we pulled up to Der Dutchman in Walnut Creek for lunch, the line was out the door and around the corner. Apparently, that’s normal during the summer and on the weekends. This place is a hot spot with delicious food!

From meat-and-potatoes meals to scratch-made pastries and pies for take-home, this is the place to eat genuine Amish kitchen cooking.

Age of Steam Roundhouse

Here you can discover the glory days of railroading. If you’re a fan of trains, you’re going to love the private tour at Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum.

This is located on 34 acres of farmland by the Ohio Central Railroad mainline track on a road named Smokey Lane. Here, you can find storage tracks, a storehouse, a working, 18-stall, brick roundhouse, and more. 

Here, we had a lot of fun enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Country Acres Mini Golf

Mini golf is so much fun for my family. Dylan, who is only one year old loves it. My husband, who is a PGA golf professional, so visiting Country Acres mini-golf was a lot of fun.

We were fortunate enough to visit this location in the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country the weekend before it opened.

The two courses were built with two different playing levels in mind to be enjoyed by people of all ages. Both have beautiful water features, a country theme (which I love), beautiful landscaping, and unique hole layouts on each course.

Oh yeah, and they sell hand-dipped ice cream too. Yum!

Amish Country Theater

Located right by Country Acres mini golf, more family fun is just a walk in a parking lot away. Amish Country Theater offers family-friendly variety shows in a 600-seat auditorium with state-of-the-art lighting, video, and sound. 

Some shows include nationally acclaimed Ventriloquist Ken Groves, whose comedy has taken him all around the world including 14 national television appearances, comedian Lynyrd, and the famous Amish comedy trio “The Beachy’s” and Fannie Mae.

There are many different things to do in a great place like Amish Country. As I said, you’ll need more than a day trip to do all of the things, but here is a guide that may help. 

Some things I’d love to go back for: stopping by a couple of flea markets and antique malls, window shopping for Amish furniture, touring an Amish farmhouse, and eating homemade ice cream.

If you’re not in Holmes County and are closer to Pennsylvania, I suggest visiting Lancaster County to immerse yourselves in Amish communities closer to you in the United States.

Here’s a travel tip: In Amish Country, there are a lot of back roads, so I suggest picking up some Dramamine before you hop in the car to learn about the Amish way of life with little to no modern technology for your scenic drive on the country roads.
