Planning to go to Disney World?

If so, you’re in the right place. I’ll share the average cost of a family trip to Disney World in 2023 and all the different factors that you should take into account to ensure that your trip is both affordable and enjoyable.

A Disney vacation usually involves the whole family. I suggest spending at least five days there so you can do everything and not feel rushed.

Some cost and price factors to keep in mind:

  • Theme park tickets
  • Hotel stays
  • Transportation
  • Food
  • Parking
  • Special events
  • Souvenirs
  • Other things that pop up

In short, for a family of five, the average cost of a Disney World vacation for six days can cost anywhere between $6,500-$11,000.

This can be lower if you choose to fly into Orlando on a quiet month, stay in a cheaper hotel, and pack your own meals. On the other hand, it costs a lot more if you fly there during the holiday season, stay in a deluxe hotel, and enjoy wine and alcohol a the parks, restaurants, and hotel.

10 Things you Wish you had at Disney World

Average Cost of A Family Trip To Disney World

To break down these figures, I’ll be using a family of five (like mine) visiting for six days and five nights as a baseline throughout this post.

Want to just skip to what’s relative for you? No problem. Just check out the table of contents below.

1. Time Of Year To Go

A trip to Disney World can cost a lot of money, so if you’re on a tight budget, knowing exactly when to go is a bonus. (Plus, it’ll help you avoid long lines.)

Disney World vacation costs rely pretty heavily on whether you’re going during a peak season or an off-season. Hotel stay prices can differ quite significantly between these two seasons.

The most expensive times to visit Disney World are in March and April (during Spring break and Easter), between late May to early September (Summer break), and during the holiday season from Christmas through to the New Year.

The least expensive times to visit Disney World are mid-January to early February (after the New Year is over) and in August and in September when there are no school holidays. (I wouldn’t suggest going in then because it’s very hot and hurricane season.)

The theme park tickets page posts the prices throughout the year. The more days you stay, the more days you save.

This ticketing page shows you prices for the entire year. It’s a good idea to go in and check out which months offer the best prices that suit your budget, so you can plan ahead!

Admission tickets for February 2023 hover between $101 to $116 per person.

Prices drop to below $90 in the months of August and September.

Prices become significantly steeper in December, going as high as $126 per pax.

Pro tip: Plan your itinerary ahead of time so you know exactly how many days’ worth of tickets you need. This is to prevent you from ending up with extra day tickets that you won’t be using.

For the ultimate Disney packing list, click here.

What Do These Disney World Ticket Prices Include?

Admission ticket prices to the different theme parks inside Walt Disney World are:

  • The Magic Kingdom
  • EPCOT (featuring Guardians Of The Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind)
  • Hollywood Studios (featuring Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge)
  • Animal Kingdom

The Standard Theme Park Ticket allows you to visit ONE theme park per day. It does not matter which one you pick online. Each of the four theme parks has the same admission ticket rates.

These are the base tickets. There are add-ons you can consider at an additional cost:

Park Hopper Option: Park hopper tickets allow you to hop to a different theme park after 2:00 PM until the park’s regularly scheduled closure.

Water Park and Sports Option: Allow you to visit one theme park per day, but enjoy additional visits to the water park or other sports-related fun.

A two-day ticket allows two visits to these places. A three-day ticket allows three visits, and a four-day ticket allows four visits.

These places include:

Water parks: Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park and Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park.

Sports options: ESPN’s Wide World Of Sports Complex, Disney’s Oak Trail Golf Course, Disney’s Fantasia Gardens Miniature Golf Course, and Disney’s Winter Summerland Miniature Golf Course.

To get the best deal, plan your vacation during the off-peak seasons.

Here are examples of add-ons for a five-day ticket in August. (Prices fluctuate based on the number of days and the date you book the tickets).

2. Your Age

Unlike most theme parks, Disney World regards any child above the age of ten as an adult.

To be considered a child, your kids will have to be between the ages of three to nine. (That means those under three years old are FREE!)

Therefore, if you are a family of five and have a child above the age of ten, you’ll have to buy tickets for THREE adults and two kids. Be extra careful when buying your online tickets, otherwise, you may be denied entry!

Your child may be nine now, but make sure she is still nine when your vacation date rolls around!

3. Different Ticket Types

Buying From Disney’s Website

Disney’s ticketing system is based on the number of days you are planning to visit. The longer the duration, the cheaper the day ticket rates will be, and vice versa.

Ticket prices are also higher during school holidays, public holidays, and over the weekends.

For example, a one-day ticket starts at $109 per day. If you were to buy tickets for five days, tickets can be as cheap as $99 per day.

Planning for 10 days? Ticket prices can go as low as $56 per day (depending on the dates and the seasons).

If you’ve never been to Disney World before, the recommendation is to buy a four-day ticket and spend a full day in each of the theme parks.

Buying From Other Websites

Some websites offer discounts and this is a great way to save a lot of extra money. Many authorized resellers such as Orlando Vacation, Get Away Today, and even Klook can significantly help reduce your travel costs.

I always book with a Disney-approved travel agent to get extra perks. Contact Michelle Ryan at Tink’s Magical Vacations and let her know Christina sent you!

Florida Residents

In a bid to get more residents of Florida to visit Disney World regularly, special offers on tickets run throughout the year.

At the time this post was written, promotions include:

  • Enjoying two days of Theme Park fun for $175 inclusive of tax on weekdays
  • Getting 40% off a 4-day ticket
  • Getting annual passes for as low as $19 per month

Free Admission

Children below the age of three are able to enter any Walt Disney World theme park free of charge. (You better believe we took advantage of this when our kids were little!)

4. Hotels and Room Rates

There are four types of hotel stays at Disney World, which are:

  • Deluxe option
  • Moderate option
  • Value option
  • Campgrounds

Each of these options is priced differently, with deluxe being the most expensive.

Deluxe Resorts And Villas

Disney Resorts Collection’s deluxe villas include the following hotels:

  • Disney’s Saratoga Spring Resort and Spa
  • Disney’s Old Key West Resort
  • Disney’s Polynesian Villas and Bungalows
  • Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort
  • The Villas At Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Kidani Village
  • Disney’s Boardwalk Villas
  • Disney’s Beach Club Villas
  • Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Jambo House
  • Copper Creek Villas and Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
  • Disney’s Riviera Resort
  • Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
  • Disney’s Contemporary Resort
  • Disney’s Yacht Club Resort
  • Disney’s Boardwalk Inn

When I keyed in the dates August 23 to 28, 2023 to check for room availability, prices for deluxe villas were all above the $500 per night range, with some going as high as $1257.80 per night (the Copper Creek Villas and Cabins).

Here is a quick glance at the prices (per night) you’ll be expected to pay if you choose to stay at a deluxe villa in the off-season month of August 2023 for a family of five (3 adults and 2 children – assuming one child is above the age of 10 and is considered an adult in Disney).

Prices per night

Disney’s Saratoga Spring Resort and Spa$572.80
Disney’s Old Key West Resort$578.80
Disney’s Polynesian Villas and Bungalows$758.80
Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort$880.20
The Villas At Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa$758.80
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Kidani Village$705.40
Disney’s Boardwalk Villas$583.60
Disney’s Beach Club Villas$538.20
Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge$457.60
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Jambo House$708.00
Copper Creek Villas and Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge$1257.80
Disney’s Riviera Resort$644.60
Disney’s Wilderness Lodge$924.20
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge$1132.40
Disney’s Contemporary Resort$544.60
Disney’s Yacht Club Resort$576.20
Disney’s Boardwalk Inn$583.60

If expenses are not an issue, you’ll be able to stay at a nice resort within Disney World grounds for days while you explore the theme parks.

If prices are steep for you here, then you’ll want to get a hotel room in a moderate or value resort.

If you’re the type to stay out the whole day and only come back to the hotel to sleep, then you’ll be able to significantly lower your hotel stay costs by going for a standard room under the ‘Value’ option since you won’t be really making use of the deluxe resorts’ facilities and amenities that much.

Disney Resort Hotels: Moderate Resorts

The following list of hotels are classified as moderate in price and stay experience:

  • Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort
    • We’ve stayed here before and love the pool. It was also pretty cool taking the sky ride to and from some theme parks.
  • Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside
  • Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort
  • Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter
  • The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort

Here are the prices you’ll be expected to pay if you choose to stay at a moderate resort in the off-season month of August 2023 for a family of five (3 adults and 2 children – assuming one child is above the age of 10 and is considered an adult in Disney).

Prices per night

Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort$343.80
Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside$329.20
Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort$964.60
Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter (available for a party of 4 or smaller)Party size exceeds room’s maximum occupancy
The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort$420.80

You’ll notice that the average price per room per night is lower than that of the deluxe option. In order to secure the best deal and keep your Disney vacation cost economical, take note of how many nights you’ll be staying and the types of rooms you need.

If these prices are still a tad too high for your budget, fret not. There is still the ‘value’ option for you to check out!

Disney Value Resorts

Here is the list of hotels categorized under the ‘value’ option:

  • Disney’s All-Star Music Resort
  • Disney’s Art of Animation Resort
    • We’ve stayed here before and my kids couldn’t get enough of the great decor on the hotel grounds
  • Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort
  • Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort
  • Disney’s Pop Century Resort

Hotels in this category will have smaller rooms and less luxurious amenities, but that doesn’t make it any less comfortable. Imagine the fun you’ll have coming back to a nice, clean room, a big bed, and a hot shower after a whole day out!

Here are the prices you’ll be expected to pay if you choose to stay at a value resort in the off-season month of August 2023 for a family of five (3 adults and 2 children – assuming one child is above the age of 10 and is considered an adult in Disney).

Prices per night

Disney’s All-Star Music Resort$329.60
Disney’s Art of Animation Resort$483.20
Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort (available for a party of 4 or smaller)Party size exceeds room’s maximum occupancy
Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort (available for a party of 4 or smaller)Party size exceeds room’s maximum occupancy
Disney’s Pop Century Resort (available for a party of 4 or smaller)Party size exceeds room’s maximum occupancy

I went ahead and keyed in the rates for a family of four (2 adults, and 2 children).

Here are the rates for these same hotels:

Disney’s All-Star Music Resort$149.20
Disney’s Art of Animation Resort$228.00
Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort$149.20
Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort$149.20
Disney’s Pop Century Resort$196.00

The trend here is that the smaller your traveling party, the cheaper the nightly hotel room rates will be. The same goes for admission tickets.

Campgrounds

There is only one resort hotel under this category and that is Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground.

This resort showcases the natural beauty of the American frontier, with animals such as rabbits, deer, armadillos, and ducks roaming its 750 acres of pine and cypress forest.

This resort boasts:

  • Fully equipped campsites
  • Pool with waterslides
  • Golf carts for rent
  • Recreational sports such as archery, horseback riding, and canoeing
  • A pet-friendly policy

Prices are also pretty affordable, with room rates starting from $79 per night.

Hotel and resort stays can make or break your vacation trip due to the potentially high costs they can incur. Therefore to be able to enjoy the theme parks plus your Disney World hotel stay, as a reminder, take these factors into account:

  • Best or cheapest time to go
  • Number of people going (the more, the higher the hotel rates)
  • The fact that children above the age of 10 will have to be charged adult rates
  • The number of days you’ll be staying

Off-Site Resorts

There are many other hotels outside of Disney World that you can opt to stay in, however, if this your first ever trip to Disney World, do stay at a Disney hotel purely for the experience and memories.

Plus, when you stay at a Disney hotel, you get some perks like getting into the parks before they open to the general public.

Off-site stays, while cheaper, may come with other extra costs such as transportation to Disney World, missing out on certain special events and processions as well as the ‘true magic’ of Disney.

Some popular off-site stays include:

  • Airbnb
  • Vacation homes
  • Smaller hotels
  • Motels and Inns

Prices usually start at $150 per night per room.

5. Food Costs

To make it easy, we’ll categorize dining into three types:

  • Table service restaurants
  • Quick service meals, and
  • Snacks

Food can cost A LOT at the Disney World theme parks, hotels, and restaurants. If you’re into high-end restaurants and alcohol, the cost of your daily meals (for a family of five) can rival that of your daily hotel stay rates.

If you’re on a budget, planning out your meals and eating quick-service meals will help you save a lot of cash.

Table Service Restaurants

A table service meal typically involves a waiter coming to take your order and attend to your table.

Restaurants in this category are naturally more expensive and can cost anywhere between $40 to $100 per person, per meal.

Featured table service restaurants include:

  • 1900 Park Fare ($$$)
  • 50s Prime Time Cafe ($$)
  • Akershus Royal Banquet Hall ($$)
  • Ale and Compass Restaurant ($$)
  • Bar Riva ($$)
  • Be Our Guest Restaurant ($$$$)
    • We did this once for the experience and it was fabulous! (Try the gray stuff. It’s delicious.)
  • Beaches and Cream Soda Shop ($$)
  • Big River Grille and Brewing Works ($$)
  • The Boathouse: Great Food, Waterfront Dining, and Dream Boats ($$)
  • Boatwright’s Dining Hall ($$)
  • Boma – Flavors of Africa ($$)
  • Capa ($$$$)
  • Capa May Cafe ($$$)
  • Chef de France ($$)
  • Cinderella’s Royal Table ($$$$)

For the full list of table service restaurants, click here.

Quick Service Meals

This is Disney’s version of fast food meals. The food will carry a price range of $10 to $30 per person, per meal.

A benefit of these restaurants is that you can get in and out really quickly.

Plus, you can order online when you’re hopping off a ride and get to the restaurant as your meal is finished being prepared. Just use the My Experience App for this (and everything else).

Featured quick-service meals restaurants include:

  • 4 Rivers Cantina Barbacoa Food Truck ($)
  • ABC Commissary ($)
  • AbracadaBar ($)
  • Ale and Compass Lounge ($)
  • Aloha Isle ($)
  • Amorette’s Patisserie ($)
  • Arctic Expeditions ($)
  • The Artist’s Palette ($)
  • Avalunch ($)
  • B.B Wolf’s Sausage Co. ($)
  • Banana Cabana ($)
  • Barcelona Lounge ($)
  • Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza ($)
  • Chip N Dale’s Cafe ($)

For the full list of quick-service restaurants, click here.

Snacks

There are many stalls and trucks you can grab snacks – sausages, sandwiches, popcorn, ice cream, and more at lower prices of $4 to $10 per snack.

Examples of snack prices:

  • Nachos and cheese – $9.99
  • Hot dog and chips – $9.75
  • Popcorn – $5.50
  • Fruit cup – $5.00
  • Soft drinks – $4.00 to $5.00
  • Coffee – $3.50

The prices between these three categories differ remarkably. If you’re comfortable with going without alcohol, eating fast food, and snacking, you’ll be able to avoid table-service restaurants that serve food at much higher prices.

Alcohol typically costs between $10 to $14 – with $10 for beer and $11 to $14 for cocktails and wine.

Budgeting On Food

Here are some ways you can save a little bit more on food during your Walt Disney World vacation:

  • Bring water bottles with you (usually refilled and offered in hotels) so you can save on drinks when having your meals.
  • Opt for snacks and quick service meals instead of table service restaurants.
  • Some hotels offer the best value packages that come with free breakfast. Make the most of the free breakfast so you can cut down on the snacks while exploring the theme parks.
  • If you’re staying in a vacation home or an Airbnb, the best way to save on meals will be to cook your own meals and bring them with you!

6. Transportation Costs

Now that we’ve gotten the admission tickets, hotel stays, and food costs covered, let’s check out the costs of transportation to get your family to the Walt Disney World Resort.

Types of transportation costs include:

  • Flights
  • Transport from Orlando International Airport to your hotel (on-site)
  • Transport from your off-site hotel to Walt Disney World Resort
  • Driving
  • Parking

Flights

Orlando International Airport is one of the most popular airports in the world. You can fly to this airport in the United States directly from many places internationally and domestically.

Domestic flights cost around $200 to $400 per person. Depending on the airline company and the season you book, you may even get a plane ticket costing below $200 per person at times.

CheapFlights.com also gives you tips on when it’s best to purchase your tickets as well as the best time to fly.

I did a quick check on how much it’ll cost to fly to Orlando from New York and found out that flight prices in April were potentially 27% higher. The average cost of a round trip would be $165 per person… which is pretty awesome!

A travel agent may also be able to whip up affordable packages for you that include flight, transfer, and admission tickets, as well as hotel stays, and more.

Airport To Hotel Transfer

A shared transfer luxury vehicle (of up to six people) can cost around $160 per way, per vehicle.

Here is what I got with a quick check on Viator’s website:

There is also Mears Connect, an affordable shuttle service that brings you from Orlando International Airport to your Disney hotel.

You also have the option to book round-trip tickets so your transfer back to the airport will be planned out in advance.

Prices start from $16 per adult and $13.50 per child.

Off-Site Resorts Transportation Costs

If you’re staying at a resort outside of Disney World, you will need to spend money on transportation from your hotel to the resort itself.

Transportation will include Uber and Lyft costs. These companies have vehicles that cater to the number of people in your group, offering vehicles from sedans to SUVs to minivans.

Prices range between $30 to $60 per way depending on time, the number of people, and whether you’re using Uber, Lyft, or a taxi.

Driving

Another option when you’re staying at an off-site property resort is to book a rental car and drive yourself around.

Disney World partners with Alamo, a car rental company that allows you to check the approximate rental price you’ll need to fork out for cars.

Depending on the type of car you pick (economy to premium) as well as the size (sedan, SUV, or minivan), prices for the whole six-day rental can range between $600 to $2,000.

Parking

Parking rates can be pretty intense at Walt Disney World Resort.

Standard parking at theme parks will cost you $25 per day, while preferred parking (more exclusive parking) will cost $45-$50 daily.

Overnight parking costs $25 per night at deluxe resorts, $20 per night at moderate resorts, and $15 per night at value resorts.

Multiply that by five days and the total cost of your parking fees can be anywhere between $250 to $325.

7. Souvenirs and Merchandise

You’re going to the most magical place in the world, so you need to bring home some souvenirs. Trust me, Disney has A LOT to choose from.

You can buy the same merchandise online at Disney World’s official website before going there and save up to 50% in prices versus buying the merchandise directly at the resort itself. You can also buy Disney products at a variety of other stores and online.

Some popular merchandise include:

  • Mugs
  • Plushies
  • Jerseys
  • T-shirts
  • Mickey Mouse ears hat

Check out more prices of Disney merchandise here.

8. Other Expenses

  • Attractions and Entertainment
  • Character Experiences
  • Enchanting Extras Collection
  • Memory Maker
