Fruit flies are one of the most annoying things fruit lovers experience. Fruit flies find it very easy to lay eggs on places that provide food and moisture.
Places where rotten fruits exist like trashcans, and even sinks, are common spots you find these pesky bugs.
How to get Rid of Fruit Flies
STEP 1:
Use a wine bottle, old soda, or vase to serve as the trap. (Any jar will work.)
STEP 2:
A type of fruit, soda, juice, or any sugary item is great fruit fly bait. Some examples include:
- Rotten fruit like bananas, soft strawberries, etc.
- Maple Syrup
- Corn Syrup
- Honey
- Fruit Juice or Soda (Diet soda won’t work.)
- Apple cider vinegar
- Soy Sauce
STEP 3:
Create a funnel using a piece of paper. Roll it up and put it in the container. Put the funnel in the mouth of the container so that the narrow side is pointing down. The funnel tip should not touch the bait. A small hole will allow the flies to enter the jar, but they won’t be smart enough to fly back out.
STEP 4:
Place the trap in a fruit-fly infested area. Like near the kitchen sink or the garbage can. Leave the traps out overnight. You should see fruit flies by the next day!
STEP 5:
To kill these trapped fruit flies, pour a mixture of warm water and dish soap into the container. The dish soap will reduce the surface tension of the water and cause the flies to drown. Wait a minute or two, then discard the content of the jar.
STEP 6:
Rinse the jar thoroughly with hot water when you’re finished and enjoy your pest free kitchen!
