But first, the calendar. The main difference between Julian and Gregorian calendars is that an average year in Julian calendar is 365.25 days while an average year in Gregorian calendar is 365.2425 days. Gregorian calendar is the normal calendar we currently use to determine the date. Julian calendar was used from 46 B.C to 1582.

Countries all around the world have their own unique New Years traditions – lentils (Brazil and Italy), suckling pig (Austria) and grapes (Spain). The Danish, for example, smash broken china on friends’ front doors, supposedly in a sign of affection. But you obviously don’t need to go global to learn a lot about New Years.

We have plenty of customs right here at home in the United States, from watching a giant crystal-covered ball drop in New York City’s Times Square at the stroke of midnight and drinking sparkling spirits at midnight to eating black-eyed peas and making New Years resolutions to begin at the start of the New Year on January 1st. Many people also listen and sing the song Auld Lang Syne as they look forward to the coming year.

You might not know that the Times Square ball weighs nearly six tons, or that more than 360 million glasses of sparkling wine are consumed in the U.S. each New Years Eve.
