Nothing beats a home-cooked meal. Am I right? If you put in the time and practice, the taste beats outside food almost all the time. (Just ask my husband.) Not to mention, making a good home-cooked meal makes you feel like you accomplished something great because it’s not easy. (Trust me, I know.)

Smothered Baked Turkey Wings Recipe

This turkey wings recipe (not chicken wings, although those could be substituted) includes simple ingredients and could be a hit for Sunday dinner or even Thanksgiving dinner. It can also be something you make with leftovers from your whole turkey the next day.

In this easy recipe, we’re making everything from scratch.

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cooking Time: 3 hours and 30 minutes
  • Servings: 3

Roast Turkey Wing Recipe Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs. of turkey wings
  • 3 Tablespoons of olive oil
  • 2 Tablespoons of butter
  • 2 teaspoons of garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons of onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground sage
  • 1 teaspoon dry thyme
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ cup of all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups of chicken broth or turkey stock
  • 2 stalks of celery
  • Chopped onion
  • Chopped bell pepper
  • Kosher salt and black pepper

Roast Turkey Wing Recipe Directions:

  1. To begin preparing the turkey wings meal, you will need to preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Using cool water, rinse the turkey and then pat it dry.
  3. First, gather the following seasonings to create a dry rub: salt, pepper, sage, garlic powder, thyme, and onion powder. Mix them and rub the seasoning all over the turkey meat.
  4. Next, coat the turkey legs and turkey drumsticks with flour. Sprinkle some flour into a large freezer bag. Then, place the whole wings inside and close.
  5. Shake the bag until the turkey has a coat of flour all over. (Save any excess flour for the gray recipe below!)
  6. Next, you will need to brown the surface of the turkey. So, take a baking pan and add 3 Tablespoons of olive oil along with 2 Tablespoons of butter. Use medium heat to heat the oil and melt the butter.
  7. Once they are hot, it’s time to add the turkey to brown the surface of the turkey on the stove.
  8. Then, transfer the turkey into a large baking dish or casserole dish.
  9. Toss the chopped vegetables into the pan. You can use season salt and black pepper with the fresh herbs if you’d like. Cook the vegetables over medium heat.
  10. Turn off the heat and transfer the veggies into the baking dish with the turkey wings. (You can keep the oil and butter mixture. It will come in handy for the homemade gravy!)
  11. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil. Put the dish into the preheated oven and bake at a slow roast for two hours at 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

Roast Turkey Wings Gravy Directions:

  1. Using the same oil and butter mixture from before, heat it again over medium heat.
  2. Once it’s hot, sprinkle the leftover flour from the previous steps above.
  3. Stir the mixture until it’s brown.
  4. Mix in chicken broth or turkey stock and continue stirring.
  5. Now, you can pour in milk, cream, or half and half – your choice!
  6. Keep stirring until it is well mixed.
  7. As it cooks over medium heat, it should thicken up.
  8. Smother the turkey with this gravy. This is what makes the roast turkey wings recipe a smothered turkey wings recipe.
  9. Cover the dish with aluminum foil again and put it back in the oven for an additional hour and a half until the internal temperature is at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  10. Take the tender turkey wings out of the oven and let the recipe cool.
  11. Unwrap, serve, and enjoy!
